Three Goals for ILA 2018 Attendees to Consider
By Emily Gasper
It's that time of year again! School may be out, but learning doesn’t simply stop during the summer. For many of us, summer is a time to plan and prepare to hone our skills for next year.
An effective (and fun!) way to continue learning over the summer is to attend a conference such as the one hosted by the International Literacy Association (ILA) in Austin, Texas, in just a few weeks.
Will you join us at ILA 2018? If so, we’d like you to consider the following three goals and activities for the conference:
Imagine what positive changes you’d like to see in literacy. The theme for ILA 2018 is Be a Changemaker. What do you most wish you could change about the state of literacy today? How will you inspire change in your school or district? Whether your focus is curriculum, coaching, or classroom creativity, make answering these questions a goal for your conference attendance this year. ILA makes it easy to zero in on a focus area of your choice with their conference tracks and added events. Or find inspiration at the conference, and figure it out as you go!
Explore the exhibit hall. Already know what sessions you’re going to? Great! In between sessions, remember to explore the exhibit hall. The hall provides a great opportunity to meet with exhibitors like us, attend book signings, and more. Plus, everyone knows the exhibit hall is the place to score free giveaways. Attend a Great Minds® Wit & Wisdom® in-booth session at ILA, and you’ll be entered to win a special giveaway of books included in the Wit & Wisdom curriculum!
Immerse yourself in Austin’s culture. Though there will be plenty to do during ILA (ever wish you could clone yourself at conferences?), there’s also a lot of fun to be had in Austin. Called the Live Music Capital of the World, Austin is known for its lively downtown music scene, delicious Tex-Mex food and BBQ, and array of outdoor activities. If you’re brave enough to step outside in the Texas summer sun, you’re sure to find an activity you’ll enjoy. Just don’t forget the sunblock!
Summer is going by quickly, and ILA 2018 is just a few weeks away. What do you hope to learn, see, or experience at the conference this year? Tweet at us @WitWisdomELA and let us know.
We hope to see you in Austin!
