  • deliver practical methods and strategies.

Session Descriptions

Intentionally sequenced professional development sessions cumulatively build educators’ understanding of the curriculum and their implementation skills. All the sessions listed below are offered in-person throughout the year. For more information about what each session covers, click the session title.

Launch Wit & Wisdom
Introduces teachers, coaches, and school leaders to the curriculum’s learning design
OVERVIEW:

Launch Wit & Wisdom is the first in-person session in the Wit & Wisdom professional development sequence. This session introduces users to the curriculum’s learning design, including:

  • the questioning framework teachers and students use to access, understand, and analyze complex texts
  • the role texts play in building knowledge of worthy topics
  • module and lesson instructional components
  • student learning in a lesson

Timing:

If you have not previously experienced any Wit & Wisdom PD.

Outcomes:
  • Develop a shared Wit & Wisdom lexicon that promotes coherence across classrooms and collaboration among colleagues.
  • Learn the “what and why” of Wit & Wisdom’s learning design and understand how the individual parts build the whole curriculum.
  • Begin to learn key, repeatable practices for preparing to teach a module and lessons.
  • Develop understanding of the intentionality, vertical alignment, rigor, and comprehensive standards coverage.
  • Learn how to navigate resources more efficiently, confidently, and independently.

Writing in Wit & Wisdom
Introduces teachers, coaches, and school leaders to Wit & Wisdom’s approach to teaching informative, opinion/argument, and narrative writing types
OVERVIEW:

Writing in Wit & Wisdom is one of two options after the Launch session in the Wit & Wisdom professional development sequence. This session introduces users to the curriculum’s approach to teaching informative, opinion/argument, and narrative writing, including:

  • expectations for student writers for each writing type
  • the importance of deep content knowledge to effective writing
  • the framework teachers and students use to learn the craft of writing
  • the role of writing models in scaffolding writing instruction
  • the power of an integrated approach to writing instruction

    Outcomes:
    • Develop a shared understanding of Wit & Wisdom’s approach to writing instruction, leading to stronger implementation, coherence across classrooms, and effective collaboration among colleagues.
    • Learn the “what and why” of Wit & Wisdom’s writing expectations for informative, opinion/argument, and narrative writing.
    • Develop understanding of the curriculum’s intentionality, vertical alignment, rigor, and comprehensive standards coverage with regard to writing.
    • Understand the purpose and power of deep content knowledge, the Craft Stages, and writing models in supporting effective student writing

    Preparation and Customization
    Empowers educators to implement the curriculum with integrity by thoughtfully preparing lessons and strategically customizing them to meet students’ needs
    OVERVIEW:

    Preparation and Customization of a Wit & Wisdom Lesson is one of two options after the Launch session in the Wit & Wisdom professional development sequence. This session empowers users to implement the curriculum with integrity as they learn:

    • the intended and unintended consequences of different implementation approaches
    • a process for thoughtfully preparing to teach lessons
    • a process for strategically customizing lessons

    Timing:

    If you have experienced Launch Wit & Wisdom and have implemented the curriculum for at least six weeks.

    • Implementation Approaches Analysis
    • Strategic Lesson Preparation
    • Customization with Integrity

    Outcomes:
    • Develop an understanding of why Wit & Wisdom is meant to be taught with integrity and the unintended consequences of other implementation approaches.
    • Learn how to prepare to teach lessons by understanding what happens in each lesson and why.
    • Develop skill in customizing lesson-level instruction to meet specific student needs with integrity and in ways that maintain rigor and joy.

    A Strength-Based Site Visit
    Provides educators with opportunities to participate in guided observations
    OVERVIEW:

    Strength-Based Site Visit follows the first three sessions in the Wit & Wisdom professional development sequence. This session provides users with opportunities to participate in guided observations that empower teachers and leaders to engage in:

    • collective identification of implementation strengths
    • thoughtful examination of the current status of their implementation
    • development of site-specific implementation goals and strategies

    Timing:

    If you have experienced the three Year 1 sessions (Launch Wit & Wisdom, Writing in Wit & Wisdom, and Preparation and Customization of a Wit & Wisdom Lesson).

    • Classroom Observations
    • Observation Debrief
    • Goal-Setting and Action Plans

    Outcomes:
    • Design a positive trajectory of successful Wit & Wisdom implementation.
    • Develop internal capacity for evidence-based observation, analysis, and goal-setting.
    • Learn a process for developing new implementation strengths to achieve site-specific goals.
    • Foster a positive, collaborative community.

    Levers for Student Achievement: Fluency
    Deepens educators’ understanding of fluency, its impact on student reading success, and how best to teach it
    OVERVIEW:

    Levers for Student Achievement: Fluency is a session for Year 2+ users. This session deepens users’ understanding of fluency and its impact on student reading success, including:

    • the research defining fluency and its importance across grade levels
    • Wit & Wisdom’s use of research-aligned fluency instructional practices
    • strategies for addressing student fluency needs

    Timing:

    If you have experienced the three Year 1 sessions (Launch Wit & Wisdom, Writing in Wit & Wisdom, and Preparation and Customization of a Wit & Wisdom Lesson) and have implemented the curriculum for at least one year.

    • What and Why of Fluency Examination
    • Fluency Best Practices Exploration
    • K-8 Fluency Progression Analysis
    • Classroom Applications

    Outcomes:
    • Develop a shared understanding of fluency and its impact on student reading success, leading to stronger implementation, coherence across classrooms, and effective collaboration among colleagues.
    • Learn how Wit & Wisdom uses research-aligned fluency instructional practices in grades K-8 to support student reading engagement and success.
    • Build capacity to address specific student fluency needs by practicing fluency coaching and strategizing about classroom-based scenarios.
